Treating Your Dog’s Constipation
Sep 7th
Constipation usually occurs when the dog does not get enough bulk in his diet or when he does not get enough proper exercise. When a dog does not get the chance to eliminate when he needs to, he may develop the habit of holding it in. A dog that is not let out enough will also likely to develop this habit. In these simple cases of constipation, you may use the following treatment to ease your dog’s discomfort:
1. Feed your dog a natural diet that includes fresh vegetables with sufficient amounts of bulk. Raw meat is also considered a natural laxative for dogs. If your dog’s stool looks dry, add ½ to 1 teaspoon of bran (depending on his weight) to each serving of meal. Adding bran helps the stools hold extra moisture. You may also apply a similar treatment using ¼ to 2 teaspoons of powdered psyllium seed. This is available online and in most health food stores.
2. You may also use mineral oil temporarily in cases where there is a large build-up of hard stools. Depending on the size of your dog, add ½ to 2 teaspoons to his meals twice a day, for no longer than a week. Continued use of this method is not ideal because the oil will draw reserves of vitamin A from the dog’s body. In addition, continued use of this process may create a dependency on its use for normal elimination.
3. Make sure that the dog is getting plenty of opportunity to go outside to relieve himself. Another treatment that is very effective is to make sure that your dog is getting enough sufficient exercise. Exercise is vital for massaging his internal organs and increasing the blood flow all over his body, which also stimulates a slow metabolism. Running, long walks, or playing fetch are great forms of exercise that both you and your dog can benefit from.
Chronic case of constipation
If your dog is suffering from chronic and prolonged constipation, you may also try homeopathic treatment, which is a natural form of remedy. Consult a vet who specializes in this form of treatment to determine if this is the best route to take.
Aluminum poisoning is also possible with a dog that has a weak rectum. Signs of aluminum poisoning include chronic constipation with straining and sticky and messy stools rather than hard ones. Even if the stool is soft, weak rectal muscles make passage difficult. If you feel that aluminum poisoning is the cause of your dog’s chronic constipation, stop using aluminum cooking pots and dishes when preparing your dog’s food. Avoid pet food that is sold in aluminum cans. In addition, do not feed your dog processed cheeses, table salt, white flour, and tap water. To remove the aluminum from his body, use high doses of vitamin C – about 500 milligrams to 3 grams per day along with zinc supplement-5 milligrams for small dogs up to 20 milligrams for large dogs.

Understanding Dogs Part 17 – What Happens Beyond 12 Weeks ?
Sep 6th
Sometime between the 4th and eighth months, your baby dog starts to understand that there is a large, wide world out there. Up to this time, each time you called, Tommy likely eagerly came to you. But now he might prefer to ramble off and analyze.
Tommy is maturing and cutting the apron strings, which is standard. He isn’t being nasty or disobedient ; he’s just becoming a teen. While he’s going thru this phase, keep Tommy on a leash or in a confined area till he has learned to come when called.
Otherwise, not coming when called becomes a pattern – exasperating to you and perilous to Tommy. After this activity becomes a habit, breaking it is difficult ; prevention is the more efficient cure.
Training your dog to come when called is far easier before he has developed the practice of running away. Practice calling him in the house, out in the yard, and at random times. Have a treat in your pocket to buttress the behaviour you would like. When you want to collect in a rambling Tommy, do not under any circumstances, play the game of chasing him. Instead, run the other way and get Tommy to chase you.
If that does not work, kneel on the ground and pretend you have found something very interesting, hoping Tommy’s curiosity brings him to you. If you’ve got to, approach him slowly in an upright position, employing a nonthreatening tone of voice till you can quietly take hold of his collar.
Your young dog also goes thru teething in this period and desires to munch everything and anything. Dogs, like youngsters, can not help it. If one of your favourite shoes is demolished, try and control yourself. Puppies have the annoying practice of tackling many shoes, but just one from each pair.
Look at it as a lesson to keep your things out of reach. Scolding will not stop the necessity to gnaw, but it may result in your pet to fear you. Your job is to provide sufficient outlets for this need , for example gnaw bones and toys. Our dogs’ faves are marrow bones, which you can get at the superstore. These bones provide hours of entertainment for any dog, and they keep their teeth clean. Synthetic toys are also available.
Kong toys ( www.kongcompany.com ) are a great favourite, particularly the hard rubber ones that are just about indestructible and that may be stuffed with peanut butter or tripe. They come in different sizes suitable to the scale of your dog and can keep most dogs busy for hours. Just be certain they are massive enough so he cannot incidentally swallow one. Stay away from soft and fuzzy toys. Probabilities are, your dog will destroy them and may eat part of them.
We personally do not like rawhide gnaw toys that have been treated with chemicals or items that become soft and gooey with gnawing as the dog can swallow them and get them stuck in the intestinal duct. When Tommy is going thru this stage, you may need to consider crating him when he is left alone.
Doing so will keep him and your things safe, and both of you’ll be cheerful. Crating him in this expansion spurt helps with his house-training, too. With all of the chewing he does during his teething, accidents infrequently occur.

What You Should Know About Dogs That Bite!
Sep 4th
Some dogs are prone to bite. At least, that’s what many in the media would have your believe. The top 3 breeds that seem to not only get bad publicity but also are involved in biting are the Pit Bull Terriers, Rottweilers and German Shepherd Dogs.
Now on the surface, this may seem to many to suggest that these three dog breeds are dangerous. At least, this is what the media would like you to believe. While there’s no denying that these breeds have been known to bite, the sensationalism and hype by the media has sometimes generated almost hysteria like fervor in the general public against these breeds.
While the media prefers to focus on the fact that a dog has bitten someone, they neglect to develop other important aspects of a dog biting story. For example:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention document that a chained dog is 2.8 times more likely to bite than an unchained dog.
Or how about this:
25% of all fatal attacks were inflicted by chained dogs
At issue here is the knee-jerk cry from the politicians and some of the public that these dogs are well secured in their own yard. As you can see by the two facts above, this demand actually can INCREASE the risk of a dog bite.
The problem here is that politicians need to be viewed as “doing something” especially on those issues where the media has whipped up public hysteria. This isn’t to say that a dog bite shouldn’t be taken seriously. But doing something and doing the right thing are often times two different things.
At issue here is not a specific dog breed the owner who has neglected to properly or adequately socialize the animal. Lack of socialization can make a dog, fearful of new situations and exhibit aggressive behavior. Dogs that aren’t socialized with children, will often see them as a threat. This helps explain why 79% of all dog bite related fatalities are children under the age of 12. Use the link below to get a free report on how to effectively crate train your pet
The Rottweiler and German Shepherd are large dogs that are used in many working situations. There’s a reason why the majority of police officer K-9 units use German shepherds. This fact alone should indicate that biting is not a breed specific problem. You would also feel extraordinarily secure in the presence of a Rottweiler trained to the schutzhund 3 level of protection training.
Let’s not condemn a breed of dog for the lack of proper training and etiquette They received from their owners. While the media may continue their hype, and politicians overreact, let’s remember that many of our large dog breeds are a benefit to their owners and society.
